Unlocking the Power of AI with ChatGPT Plugins- A Complete Guide and Their Real-World Applications

As OpenAI continues to progress its powerful language model, GPT-4, it is striving to develop an ecosystem of plugins to provide an enhanced user experience and access to a host of new features. Plugins are being crafted and tested, capable of integrating with external APIs to enable ChatGPT to carry out a range of operations such as scheduling flights, booking restaurant reservations, and even delivering tailor-made shopping experiences.

Four distinct types of Plugins have been crafted for ChatGPT which are:

  • Third Party Plugins– Developed by external platforms, these plugins are available in ChatGPT, offering a range of features that are tailored to meet specific needs. Examples of third-party plugins in ChatGPT are: Expedia, Fiscal Note, Instacart, KAYAK, Klarna, OpenTable, Wolfram and Zapier.
  • Web Browsing Plugins– Endowing ChatGPT with internet access, these plugins employ Bing AI to navigate the web and retrieve sought-after information on demand. A prime example of such a plugin is the experimental ChatGPT Browsing Plugin, which has been inspired by Natural Language Processing and Travel Search to simplify shopping, Restaurant Recommendations to enhance dining, and Automation Tasks to step up Symbolic and Numerical Computation.
  • WebGPT, GopherCite, BlenderBot2, and LaMDA2– These plugins are designed to enhance the ChatGPT’s capabilities by enlarging its knowledge base.

OpenAI is rolling out these plugins in stages, to analyze their real-world application, impact and the safety and alignment risks they pose.

ChatGPT Releases Innovative Plugins to Improve Natural Language Processing

ChatGPT, a leading provider of natural language processing (NLP) technology, has released two innovative plugins to enhance the capabilities of its NLP system. The first, the Browsing Plugin, gives users the ability to safely search the web with ChatGPT’s text-based browser, utilizing the Bing search API. To ensure security, the browser only makes GET requests, and the text-based browser respects web norms, using the ChatGPT-User user-agent token, and honoring robots.txt files. The Browsing Plugin also keeps track of visited websites and cites sources in its responses to provide transparency, accuracy, and credit to content creators. To prevent any unwelcome access, it also features rate-limiting measures and, in cases of blockage, will display a “click failed” message.

The second plugin, the ChatGPT Code Interpreter Plugin, aims to make programming more accessible by introducing a secure and sandboxed environment Python interpreter to the ChatGPT NLP system. The interpreter can be used to perform various tasks such as solving mathematical problems, conducting data analysis, and converting files between formats. Additionally, users can upload files to the conversation workspace and download the results, all within the safe confines of the interpreter’s execution environment, which has strict network controls and resource limits.

Finally, the Retrieval Plugin enables users to access personal or organizational information sources, such as files, notes, emails, and public documentation, via natural language processing. This self-hosted solution allows developers to deploy their own models to extract or generate knowledge from a specific domain, or match user needs with relevant applications such as Expedia, Fiscal Note, Instacart, KAYAK, Klarna, OpenTable, Wolfram, or Zapier.

KAYAK, Expedia Group and Instacart Join OpenAI’s ChatGPT

On March 23, 2023, KAYAK announced its collaboration with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its services. ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool designed to simplify the actions of producing professional documents by responding to questions asked in everyday language. Through this integration, ChatGPT will be able to act as a virtual travel advisor, helping users to plan and book trips, shop for groceries, and gain insights into political and regulatory information.

Expedia Group also announced that it has developed a plugin for ChatGPT that connects users to Expedia’s library of travel data and allows them to gather up-to-date information about the availability and price of flights, hotels, vacation rentals, activities, and car rentals from all over the world. The plugin then sends users to Expedia to complete the purchase. This plugin marks the first of its kind in the travel industry, and is designed to simplify the planning process for ChatGPT users.

FiscalNote, a provider of political, legal, and regulatory intelligence, has also joined forces with OpenAI to open up certain data and information to OpenAI’s user base. The collaboration hopes to gain valuable insights into how users may use generative models to understand political and regulatory information in the future, and to create opportunities for product development for FiscalNote’s domain-specific models.

Instacart has also developed a plugin for ChatGPT which combines ChatGPT’s natural language processing capabilities with Instacart’s AI technology. This enables users to shop for ingredients and have them delivered simply by having a conversation with ChatGPT. Instacart’s catalog contains more than 1.5 million products from over 1,100 retail banners, making it possible for users to turn their ChatGPT-initiated meal plans into a reality.

ChatGPT Launches Plugins For Third Party Apps

ChatGPT recently rolled out new plugins for third party apps such as Expedia, Fiscal Note, Instacart, KAYAK, Klarna, OpenTable, Wolfram, and Zapier. The plugin launches allow for personalized and conversational interactions with the search engine, giving users the ability to type in natural language queries and receive tailored advice and recommendations based on current travel data and past search criteria.

KAYAK, in particular, is making strides in the world of travel search with the new integration of ChatGPT’s natural language understanding capabilities, enabling an easier and more intuitive way to plan dream vacations.

Klarna has also developed a plugin for ChatGPT to help foster highly personalized shopping experiences. Through the plugin, on-demand product suggestions are made based on user requests, linked to Klarna’s search and compare tool for easy purchase. Teams at Klarna and OpenAI have collaborated to bring the plugin to ChatGPT, and Klarna was the first to officially launch it.

OpenTable was the first brand to introduce the plugin with direct connection to its booking system. When a user asks for restaurant recommendations in a conversational style, OpenTable’s answers will come with a direct link to make a reservation. Similarly, Wolfram’s software and computational technology, meant for a variety of applications such as finance and engineering, pairs gorgeously with the ChatGPT and Wolfram|Alpha amalgamation to create the first large-scale statistical and symbolic AI system. Finally, Zapier ChatGPT plugin allows for automation of tasks such as messaging, emails, and data manipulation directly within the ChatGPT interface.

The plugin is powered by OpenAI’s cutting edge assistant technology, making it a revolutionary addition to the world of travel and shopping.

Zapier Launches Natural Language Actions API to Enable AI Models

With Zapier’s newly launched Natural Language Actions API, Artificial Intelligence (AI) models such as ChatGPT are now able to utilize simple, natural language to complete actions within other apps. Popular Chat GPT plugins include Milo Family AI, Shop and Speak.

In order to bridge the gap between apps and data, Embra recently unveiled Embra Plugins, which are currently in the early access stages for developers. These plugins are compatible with existing ChatGPT Plugins. To join the ChatGPT Plugin waitlist, click here. Additionally, people can locate the ChatGPT Retrieval Plugin on GitHub.

ChatGPT 3.5 is free for use, but a ChatGPT Plus subscription is necessary in order to access the most current model, GPT-4. ChatGPT Plugins are created by third-party developers, and they allow the GPT language model to access external Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). To build these plugins, developers compose special instructions that GPT can understand. After the plugin is added to GPT, the model can use the instructions to do new and exciting things.
